NOVEMBER 2023 - PRESENT

National Farmer’s Union Indigenous Solidarity Working Group:

I have been an active member and organizer in the NFU Indigenous Solidarity Working Group since 2022. I have facilitated learning circles, film screenings, and other events as well as facilitating and speaking at the NFU Annual Convention in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

THE STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

Indigenous Solidarity Strategy Deer Hide Protocol

In 2023, the NFU voted on, and unanimously passed, a resolution to conduct an organization-wide process to better integrate solidarity with Indigenous peoples and decolonization into all of the work that we do, and "that, wherever possible, the NFU endeavour to include Indigenous sovereignties, land justice, and rematriation in our land-related communications, policy development and advocacy."

With this policy resolution as our guide, two active Indigenous members/leaders met in-person in BC for an Indigenous Community Building Circle. At this circle, Celeste Smith and Natasha Anderson-Brass along with members of their families, including elder Sharon Jinkerson-Brass, created the Deer Hide based on the ancestral knowledge of their families and communities, and using their cultural protocols as a guide. This meeting and Indigenous-led creation process was supported by the ISWG and NFU leadership.

In 2024 at the national convention in Saskatoon, through Indigenous-led ceremony and protocols, the NFU adopted the Deer Hide Protocol as the symbolic representation of the Indigenous Solidarity Strategy. The Deer Hide Protocol is meant to guide us as we move forward in the ISS and in our relationships with one another and the land, towards solidarity and decolonization.
